Healthy Vision 2010

Community Research

The New England Eye Institute (NEEI) has begun a series of health services research studies focused on assessing the eye care needs of the Greater Boston area. The results of these studies will guide the growth strategy for the New England Eye Institute. Knowledge about local health disparities and how best to target a NEEI community response can also provide evidence of the need for new public and private external funding to support the service mission of the Institute. Such studies may also identify public policy initiatives that could help eliminate health disparities in vision function and eye health.

For more information on research topics and working documents link on topics listed below.

  1. Children's vision, special needs and disabilities

  2. Community research and community-oriented primary care

  3. Geriatrics and housing based care of frail elderly

  4. Homeless population care

  5. Planning demographics and location analysis

  6. Quality improvement and best practices

Healthy People 2010 and related heath disparities elimination activities of the Health Resources Administration and the Centers for Disease Control are being used to set the overall scope and research approach of NEEI’s Community Research Group.  Early research studies will first evaluate available data on health disparities relating to vision impairment and selected health status measures in eastern Massachusetts communities. For a given area of health disparity, a specific follow up research study will identify barriers to access of eye care and locate under-served populations. Related community geo-studies will depict patterns of service access and health disparities across the study region. Additional analysis of community needs and resources will than be used in the final step of developing NEEI responses to meet community need. This response strategy will consider expansion of service at current NEEI sites and the development of new service locations. The resulting growth strategy will consider organizational partners for service joint ventures and determine the availability of funding sources.
