New England Eye Receives Shapiro
Grant to Help Seniors

Boston, MA – December 7, 2006 – The New England
Eye Institute, the clinical teaching arm of the New England
College of Optometry, has been awarded a $35,000 grant from the
Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family Foundation to install video
magnifiers that project printed materials onto a closed circuit
television at five area elderly housing facilities.

December 7, 2006 – On November 22, Massachusetts Governor-elect
Deval Patrick and Lieutenant Governor-elect Tim Murray appointed
New England Eye
Institute Board member James W. Hunt Jr.
co-chair of the “Deval Patrick Transition Health Care
Committee.” The incoming governor announced the creation of 15
transition committee issues working groups that will help shape
the new administration’s policy agenda as it prepares to take
office on Jan. 4, 2007.

Coalition to Increase Opportunities for Optometrists to Work at
Community Health Centers

Boston, MA – November 30, 2006 – The New England
Eye Institute, the American Optometric Association (AOA), the
National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) and the
Massachusetts League of Community (MLCHC) are continuing to lead
an effort to secure funds that would underwrite the cost of a
needs assessment survey, which would analyze the barriers many
underserved populations confront when trying to access high
quality, comprehensive and affordable vision care at community
health centers.

Beacon Street on Tuesday, January 24 for the clinical system’s annual
meeting. The meeting served as an ideal forum for honoring staff members
who served as key contributors during the past year, reviewing impressive
NEEI’s accomplishments, educating staff on compliance issues and describing the
reorganization of NEEI’s Clinical Council.

Clubs to Conduct Vision Screenings on Inner City Youth

Boston, MA -- January 26, 2006 -- Over
the course of this Fall and Winter, NECO students, under the supervision of
NEEI’s Chief of Primary Care Services Dr. Shilpa Register, have been immersed
in providing a critical public health service to a significantly underserved
population. Since October, Dr. Register has led NECO students in
conducting vision screenings at various Boys and Girls Club sites across the
metro Boston area.
